Rising – Metcalf, Shining Light
Joanne Metcalf – Shining Light
Sunrise, Wednesday April 29
We’ve been thinking about mortality a lot lately.
Ours.
light shining in darkness
the star that speaks to the soul
It’s inspired us to read more about the age of the universe, it’s distances, numbers.
Light.
Finite spans that, to any living thing, feel infinite.
There’s something comforting about the seeming foreverness of stars.
shimmering flower of the field of angels
celestial fire
We love to sing Joanne Metcalf’s Shining Light. Its radiance, its gratitude, its lingering; it feels as if it has all the Time of the Heavens – an inconceivable endlessness. And, it hovers above, calling only for our treble voices. In this recording, we are working together, tuning up, making room for each other, supporting, reinforcing. Breathing. It’s fun to listen to that. (We can also hear the men rustling around. We were collecting pine branches and gingerly exiting at this point in our Crossing @ Christmas show…but evidently not that gingerly!)
Teamwork is the method;
the result is awe and wonder,
as in Joanne’s poem.
shimmering, shining, luminous
We are grateful for artists that shimmer.
That shine.
That illuminate.
And for listeners who allow our sounds to become music.

* * *
o shining light
o star-shine gold
jewel of the star-hall
heaven’s sparkling gem
shimmering flower of the field of angels
celestial fire
luminous, radiant, bright
lux lucens in tenebris
loquitur animae stella
[light shining in darkness
the star that speaks to the soul]
oh, shine in light
o shine
